The XQ-5KS is a series wound DC motor — it belongs to the brushed DC motor family. Current is fed to the rotor through carbon brushes and a commutator, which gives very high starting torque and a wide speed range. The trade-off is brush wear: brushes are a normal service item (typically replaced every 1,000-2,000 operating hours depending on duty cycle). Compared with brushless DC motors, brushed DC motors are cheaper and simpler to control — that is why most 48V battery forklifts, AGVs and material handling trucks still use them.
A series wound motor places the field winding in series with the armature, so torque rises sharply as load increases and is highest at standstill. That is exactly what a vehicle needs: strong pull-away from zero speed, then a natural speed increase as the load eases. The XQ-5KS is rated 1480 rpm at 5 kW (6.7 HP) on a 48V battery, with B35 foot-and-flange mounting for a rigid, flange-coupled installation. For indoor material handling and towing, this combination delivers the acceleration and overload margin a traction drive demands without the cost of an electronic commutator.

Q: Is IP21 protection enough for my application?
A: IP21 protects against finger contact and vertically falling water drops — it is rated for indoor and sheltered industrial use (warehouses, enclosed factory floors, dry cabs). It is NOT for outdoor rain, washdown or immersion. If your vehicle runs outdoors or gets hosed down, ask our engineering team about IP44 or higher enclosures.
