The XQB-4.5 is a series wound DC motor — it belongs to the brushed DC motor family. Current reaches the rotor through carbon brushes and a commutator, the same as compound and shunt DC motors. What makes the brushed design relevant here is ruggedness: with no fragile electronics on the rotor, the motor tolerates the shock, dust and heat of heavy industrial duty, and the whole assembly can be sealed inside a flame-proof enclosure.
A series wound DC motor draws its highest current — and therefore develops its highest torque — at zero speed. That is exactly what a conveyor, winch or pump needs when it has to break a load free from a standstill in a hazardous area. Once running, the speed falls as the load rises, which protects the drive mechanically. The catch with a bare series motor is that it must never be run uncoupled (it can overspeed), so it is fed through a 48V DC controller sized for the 118 A draw. The flame-proof Ex db IIB T4 Gb enclosure then does the safety job: any spark at the brushes or commutator is contained inside a heavy cast housing that cannot transmit an ignition to the surrounding flammable gas.

Q: Is the XQB-4.5 a traction motor or an auxiliary motor?
A: Auxiliary. The XQB-4.5 is a series wound DC motor for non-traction loads in hazardous areas — process conveyors, pumps, winches and mixers. It is not built to drive the main wheels. For main-wheel drive, see our series-wound DC traction motor range.
Q: What explosion-proof certification does the XQB-4.5 carry?
A: It is certified Ex db IIB T4 Gb — the flame-proof rating for industrial gas atmospheres (gas group IIB, Zone 1 / Zone 2). The cast enclosure contains any internal arc or spark so it cannot ignite the surrounding flammable gas. If your site is a different gas group (IIA / IIC) or has combustible dust, tell our engineering team your zone and group so we can advise the correct variant.
Q: Can you customize the voltage, mounting or shaft of the XQB-4.5?
A: Yes. OEM/ODM is supported — 24V / 36V / 48V / 60V / 72V, B3 foot mount (this model) or B5 / B35 on request, the 6-tooth external spline shaft and the duty cycle can all be customized. Send your equipment specification to our engineering team.
