72V 7.5kW Series Wound DC Traction Motor XQ-7.5-3S4 (for Forklifts, Tow Tractors, Heavy AGV & Stackers)

Your electric forklift or tow tractor keeps sagging when it meets a ramp with a full load, or you're building a heavy AGV and the 48V motor you specced can't hold the current under continuous pull. The XQ-7.5-3S4 is a 72V 7.5 kW series wound DC traction motor built for exactly that class of work: 72V / 126A direct battery drive, 1650 rpm rated (3200 rpm top), S2-60min duty, IP21 enclosure, Class F insulation, B5 flange mount (drawing OBL.300.1340) with a single output shaft. At 7.5 kW it is the mid-size workhorse of our 72V platform — sized for electric forklifts, warehouse stackers, tow tractors, airport baggage tugs and heavy AGVs, not for small walkie pallet jacks. The series-wound design delivers the high starting torque a loaded forklift or tow tractor needs to break a heavy load free from rest, then backs off as the load lightens. The 72V battery connects straight to a standard 72V chopper controller — no inverter, no DC-DC boost converter.

Why Series Wound DC for 7.5 kW Traction

The XQ-7.5-3S4 is a series wound DC motor — the same brush-and-commutator design used in industrial traction drives for decades. The series connection between the armature and field windings gives it the signature advantage for traction work: very high starting torque to break a heavy, stationary load free from rest. That is exactly what a loaded forklift needs to start moving up a ramp, what a tow tractor needs to start pulling a trailer, and what a heavy AGV needs to accelerate a payload. As the load lightens, the motor naturally speeds up — a series-wound characteristic that suits equipment with a variable duty cycle. For a 7.5 kW machine on a 72V system, this operating profile is exactly right for forklift, tow and AGV duty. The trade-off is brush wear: at 72V 126A, plan on inspecting the brushes every 1000–2000 hours in medium-to-heavy duty. Brush replacement is straightforward — the brush caps are accessible on the motor housing, no special tools needed.

72V Direct Battery: No Inverter, No Boost Converter

The XQ-7.5-3S4 runs directly off a 72V battery — there is no inverter and no DC-DC boost converter in the path. The motor controller just chops the 72V battery voltage to vary the speed, the same way a standard industrial traction controller does. That keeps the drive system simple, the failure modes few, and the wiring straightforward. Two battery pack options pair naturally with this motor: a 72V lead-acid pack (six 12V deep-cycle batteries in series, full charge around 84V) or a 72V Li-ion / LiFePO4 pack (typically a 20S configuration, 72V nominal, full charge around 84V). The motor's 126A continuous draw needs a 72V chopper controller in the 150–200A class to handle both the rated load and the start-up inrush. Set your controller to limit continuous current at 126A (or just above) for the rated load, and size it for the start-up inrush — typically 2–3× rated current for a series wound motor.

1650 rpm Rated, 3200 rpm Top: The Series-Wound Speed Range

The XQ-7.5-3S4 has a rated speed of 1650 rpm at its rated 7.5 kW load, and a maximum speed of 3200 rpm — a roughly 2:1 speed range that is characteristic of series wound traction motors. At 1650 rpm, the motor delivers its full 7.5 kW at rated torque, suitable for sustained work cycles like pulling a loaded forklift up a 5–10° ramp or driving a tow tractor against trailer resistance. As the load lightens, the motor naturally speeds up toward the 3200 rpm top — useful for the high-speed portion of a towing run or the return stroke of an AGV. The 3200 rpm top end is what the motor hits at no-load; you should not plan continuous operation at 3200 rpm or the commutator will wear fast. In practice most equipment runs the motor between 1650 and 2800 rpm with the controller chopping the upper end. If your gearbox, drum or wheel needs a different input speed, the winding can be re-tuned for a different speed band — send your spec to our engineering team.

B5 Flange Mount (OBL.300.1340) for Gearbox / Axle Coupling

The XQ-7.5-3S4 uses a B5 front flange (large flange) with a single output shaft — the motor bolts directly to a mating gearbox or axle flange, the standard mounting for forklift and tow-tractor drive units. The mounting dimensions and shaft height follow drawing OBL.300.1340 (the DC traction motor outline drawing shown on the nameplate). Before ordering, confirm your gearbox flange bolt circle, shaft diameter and keyway match the OBL.300.1340 drawing, or send us your existing motor's dimension drawing and we will confirm feasibility. For a foot-mount (B3) or double-shaft variant instead, we can build it as a custom order.

IP21 Ingress Protection for Indoor & Protected Industrial Use

The XQ-7.5-3S4 is rated IP21 — protected against solid objects over 12 mm and against vertically dripping water. That suits indoor warehouses, factory floors and protected industrial environments where the motor is not directly hosed down or exposed to driving rain. For forklift and tow-tractor duty inside a warehouse or on a covered dock, IP21 is the standard, field-proven choice. For washdown, outdoor or high-moisture duty, ask about an IP44 or IP54 upgrade — note that our smaller XQ-1.35-5K already ships IP44 if you need a higher rating at lower power.

How to Choose the Right 72V DC Traction Motor

  • By power: 7.5 kW suits mid-size 72V traction — electric forklifts, warehouse stackers, tow tractors, heavy AGV. For lighter duty (small AGV, compact cart) step down to our 72V 1.35 kW (XQ-1.35-5K) or 5.5 kW (XQ-5.5-24DAL); for heavier or higher-duty continuous work, see our 48V XQ-series or the AC traction range.
  • By voltage: 72V DC pairs with a 72V battery pack (six 12V lead-acid in series, or 72V Li-ion / LiFePO4). Do not run on 48V (insufficient voltage to develop rated power) or 96V (insulation will fail).
  • By speed: 1650 rpm rated, 3200 rpm top. Match your gearbox ratio to the wheel, drum, or axle speed you need.
  • By mounting: B5 front flange with single output shaft (drawing OBL.300.1340) — confirm your gearbox flange bolt circle and shaft spec before ordering. Foot (B3) or double-shaft variants available on custom order.
  • By current draw: 126A at rated load. Your 72V controller must be sized for 150–200A continuous (to handle start-up inrush) and 126A continuous at the rated load.
  • By environment: IP21 is drip-proof, suitable for indoor and protected industrial use. For washdown or outdoor exposure, look at IP44 or higher.
  • By duty cycle: S2-60min means the motor can run at rated load for 60 minutes, then needs to cool. For continuous operation (S1) derate power, or pick a larger frame.
  • Customization: voltage variants (48V, 80V at this frame size), terminal box orientation, encoder mounting, IP rating upgrade, custom shaft diameters or splines — all available on request. Send your existing motor's nameplate and mount spec to our engineering team for a matched drive.

Standard Compliance & Customization

The XQ-7.5-3S4 belongs to the Baoluo XQ series of series wound DC traction motors. Mounting dimensions and shaft height follow the series convention and drawing OBL.300.1340 (the DC traction motor outline drawing on the nameplate), so the motor can be a matched replacement for existing B5-flange DC traction motors in the same 7.5 kW / 72V class. Standard compliance is confirmed against the nameplate on order. For OEM customers we can customize: voltage variants at the same frame size, terminal box orientation, encoder mounting, IP rating upgrade to IP44 or IP54, and custom shaft diameters or splines. Typical lead time for standard XQ-7.5-3S4: 15–20 working days. For custom configurations: 30–40 working days. Send your spec sheet for a quote.

How to Match a Motor Controller

The XQ-7.5-3S4 needs a 72V DC motor controller (chopper or PWM controller) to vary speed and direction. The controller must be rated for at least 126A continuous current (we recommend 150–200A for start-up headroom) and handle the start-up inrush typical of series wound motors (2–3× rated current). Common controller families that pair with this motor: Curtis, Sevcon, ZAPI, and Chinese OEM controllers in the 150–300A class for 72V systems. For reversible direction the controller needs an H-bridge topology with regenerative braking; for simple on/off speed control with a potentiometer, a basic chopper controller is enough. The motor's Class F insulation (rated to 155 °C) gives plenty of thermal headroom for PWM switching transients. Match the controller's battery voltage to your pack (72V nominal) and confirm the controller's current limit is set to 126A for the rated load.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the XQ-7.5-3S4 suitable for an electric forklift?

A: Yes — 7.5 kW / 72V is a standard mid-class configuration for electric forklifts, warehouse stackers and reach trucks. It delivers the high starting torque needed to lift and move loaded forks, and the B5 flange couples straight to the drive gearbox. For a small walkie pallet jack (1–2 kW) this motor is oversized; for a heavy sit-down counterbalanced forklift you may want 10 kW or more.

Q: Do I need a motor controller? Can I connect the XQ-7.5-3S4 straight to a battery?

A: Direct battery connection will spin the motor up to its no-load speed (~3200 rpm) with no load control — not useful and not safe in practice. You need a 72V DC motor controller (chopper) rated for 150–200A to vary speed, limit the starting current, and control direction. We can recommend specific controller models matched to your load and battery.

Q: Can I run this on 48V or 96V?

A: The motor is designed for 72V only. At 48V it won't develop rated power — the voltage is too low to push the rated 126A through the windings. At 96V the insulation will fail quickly. The motor can be rewound for other voltages on custom orders — contact our engineering team with your battery and controller spec.

Q: How long do the brushes last?

A: For typical series wound motors of this size, brush life is 1000–2500 hours in medium-to-heavy duty (warehouse forklift shifts, tow-tractor runs, AGV cycles). In very heavy continuous duty expect the shorter end. Brush replacement is straightforward — the brush caps are accessible on the motor housing, no special tools required, and replacement brush sets are available from Baoluo as spare parts.

Q: Is the mounting a standard B5 flange?

A: Yes, the XQ-7.5-3S4 uses a standard B5 front flange (large flange) with a single output shaft, per drawing OBL.300.1340. Confirm the flange bolt circle, shaft diameter and keyway match your gearbox before ordering. For a foot-mount (B3) or double-shaft variant, we can build it as a custom order.

Q: Can the motor run continuously at 3200 rpm?

A: 3200 rpm is the no-load top speed — the motor can briefly hit it under no load, but continuous operation at 3200 rpm will accelerate brush and commutator wear and is not recommended. The rated operating speed is 1650 rpm; typical continuous operation is 1650–2800 rpm depending on load. The controller should be set to limit the top speed to the working range of your equipment.
