The XQ-8-3S5 is a series wound DC motor — it belongs to the brushed DC motor family. Current reaches the rotor through carbon brushes and a commutator, which is what gives very high starting torque and a wide speed range. The trade-off is brush wear: brushes are a normal service item (typically replaced every 1,000-2,000 operating hours depending on duty). Compared with brushless DC motors, brushed DC motors cost less and need a simpler controller — which is why most 72V heavy forklifts and tow tractors still run on them.
A series wound motor puts the field winding in series with the armature, so torque climbs as load climbs and peaks at standstill. That is the profile a battery vehicle needs: a strong pull-away from zero speed, then speed rising as the load lightens. At 8 kW on a 72V battery, this model is wound for 1250 rpm — the low-speed, high-torque end of the 8 kW family. Compared with the 1600 rpm XQ-8-3S4, the 1250 rpm winding trades top speed for more pull-away torque at the same power. That is what a heavy forklift on a ramp, a loaded tow tractor or a heavy transfer cart needs: grunt at low speed, not a high top end. The B5 flange bolts straight to a gearbox or axle flange and takes the reaction torque through the flange face. One rule with any series wound motor: never run it unloaded without a controller, because with no load the speed can run away.

Q: How is the XQ-8-3S5 different from the XQ-8-3S4?
A: Both are 72V 8 kW 135 A series wound motors with B5 flange, IP21 and Class F insulation. The difference is the rated speed: the XQ-8-3S5 is wound for 1250 rpm, the XQ-8-3S4 for 1600 rpm. At the same 8 kW, the 1250 rpm winding delivers more torque at lower speed — better for heavy pulling, ramp starts and loaded tow duty. The 1600 rpm version suits faster travel. Choose by how fast your vehicle must go against how much it must pull.
Q: What does 1250 rpm mean for vehicle speed?
A: Travel speed is motor rpm divided by your gear ratio, multiplied by wheel circumference. At 1250 rpm this is a low-speed, high-torque unit — it suits larger wheels or lower gear ratios for heavy loads rather than high road speed. Send us your wheel diameter and gear ratio and we will confirm the road speed before you order.
Q: What is B5 flange mounting, and can it be changed?
A: B5 is a flange-only mount: the motor bolts to a mating flange on the gearbox or axle, with no feet. It is the standard interface on forklift and tow-tractor drive units because it centres the shaft precisely and takes the reaction torque through the flange face. If your frame has a foot base instead, we can supply B3 (foot); if it needs both, B35 (foot + flange). Tell us your mounting drawing at inquiry and we match it.
