48V 1.5kW Compound Wound DC Auxiliary Motor XQD-1.5-3

The XQD-1.5-3 is a 48V 1.5kW DC compound wound auxiliary motor — a different animal from a traction motor. Where a traction motor is built for one big continuous load (driving the wheels), this one is built for the smaller, intermittent auxiliary loads on an industrial vehicle: a forklift's steering or lift hydraulic pump, a brake air compressor, a wind-turbine yaw drive, even a tricycle or low-speed utility vehicle. Compound winding (series + shunt field) gives steadier speed than a plain series motor, which is exactly what a pump or compressor wants. 2000 rpm, IP21, F insulation, S2-15min short-duty cycle, front flange mount.

Brushed DC Motor Family

The XQD-1.5-3 is a compound wound DC motor — it belongs to the brushed DC motor family. Current reaches the rotor through carbon brushes and a commutator, the same as series and shunt DC motors. What makes compound different: it has both a series field winding (for high starting torque) and a shunt field winding (for speed stability). The result is a motor that still pulls hard from standstill but doesn't run away in speed the way a pure series motor can — a good fit for pumps and compressors where the load speed should stay predictable.

Compound Wound vs Series Wound — Why It Matters for Auxiliary Loads

A traction motor is almost always series wound: maximum torque at zero speed to get a vehicle moving, and the speed naturally drops as load rises. An auxiliary pump or compressor doesn't want that behaviour — it wants fairly constant speed across its working range so flow/pressure stay predictable. The shunt winding in a compound motor flattens the speed curve, so a forklift steering pump driven by the XQD-1.5-3 delivers steadier flow than the same pump on a series motor would. That's the practical reason this motor is built compound rather than series.

How to Choose the Right Auxiliary Motor

  • By voltage: this model is 48V DC — match your vehicle's battery pack. 24V / 36V / 60V / 72V versions available on request.
  • By load: 1.5 kW suits a single steering pump, a light lift pump or a small air compressor on a Class III forklift or low-speed vehicle. Heavier simultaneous loads may need 2.2–3 kW.
  • By duty: S2-15min short-cycle duty — designed for intermittent auxiliary operation, not continuous traction. Size up if your duty is near-continuous.
  • By mount: front flange — confirm your pump/gearbox flange pattern (B5 or B14) and shaft size before ordering.
  • Customization: voltage, flange type, shaft and duty can be customized — contact engineering with your spec.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this a traction motor or an auxiliary motor?

A: Auxiliary. The XQD-1.5-3 is a compound wound DC motor for non-traction loads — pumps, compressors, yaw drives, small utility vehicles. For driving the main wheels, see our series-wound DC traction motor range.

Q: Compound wound vs series wound — which do I need?

A: If you're driving a pump, compressor or any load that wants steady speed, compound (this motor) is the better choice. If you're driving wheels and need maximum starting torque, a series-wound traction motor is the better choice. Send us your load profile and we'll advise.

Q: Can you customize voltage or the flange for XQD-1.5-3?

A: Yes. OEM/ODM supported — 24V/36V/48V/60V/72V, front-flange type (B5/B14), shaft and duty cycle can all be customized. Send your pump or gearbox spec to our engineering team.
