Brushed DC Motor Family

The XQ-3-1KS is a series wound DC motor — it belongs to the brushed DC motor family. Current reaches the rotor through carbon brushes and a commutator, which is what gives very high starting torque and a wide speed range. The trade-off is brush wear: brushes are a normal service item (typically replaced every 1,000-2,000 operating hours depending on duty). Compared with brushless DC motors, brushed DC motors cost less and need a simpler controller — which is why most 48V forklifts, stackers and platform trucks still run on them.

Series Wound — Why It Fits Traction Loads

A series wound motor puts the field winding in series with the armature, so torque climbs as load climbs and peaks at standstill. That is the profile a battery vehicle needs: a strong pull-away from zero speed, then speed rising naturally as the floor flattens out. Rated 3 kW (4.0 HP) at 1800 rpm on a 48V battery, this model sits at the high-speed end of the family — the right choice when the wheel is small and the vehicle has to move quickly between stops, not drag a load up a ramp. B35 foot-and-flange mounting takes the reaction torque of chain and gear drives without relying on the flange bolts alone. One rule with any series wound motor: never run it unloaded without a controller, because with no load the speed can run away.

How to Choose the Right Traction Motor

  • By voltage: match your battery — this model is 48V DC; 24V and 72V versions available on request.
  • By load: 3 kW (4.0 HP) suits 3-wheel forklifts, stackers and platform trucks in light to mid duty; loaded 4-wheel forklifts and ramp work need 4.5 kW and up.
  • By speed: 1800 rpm is the high-speed end of the 48V range — good for small wheels and quick travel; check it against your gear ratio before ordering.
  • By controller: size the controller for at least 80 A continuous at 48V; a controller rated below the motor current will cut out under load.
  • By environment: IP21 is indoor only — for outdoor or washdown duty ask for the IP44 version.
  • By mounting: B35 gives feet plus flange for the most rigid fixing; B3 or B5 alone can be supplied if your frame only has one interface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is B35 mounting, and can it be changed?

A: B35 combines both interfaces: feet under the frame (B3) plus a flange on the drive end (B5). It gives the most rigid fixing, which matters on a traction motor that takes chain or gear reaction loads. If your vehicle only has a flange face, we can supply B5; if it only has a foot base, B3. Tell us at inquiry and we match the drawing.

Q: Is IP21 enough for my application?

A: IP21 protects against finger contact and vertically falling water drops, so it is for indoor and sheltered use — warehouse floors, enclosed cabs, covered loading docks. It is not for rain, splash, washdown or dust-heavy outdoor work. If your vehicle goes outdoors, ask our engineering team for the IP44 version of this motor.

Q: What does 1800 rpm mean for vehicle speed?

A: Travel speed is motor rpm divided by your gear ratio, multiplied by wheel circumference. At 1800 rpm this model sits at the high-speed end of the 48V family, so it suits small wheels and faster travel rather than heavy pulling at crawl speed. Send us your wheel diameter and gear ratio and we will confirm the road speed before you order.
