Brushed DC Motor Family

The XQD-3-14 is a compound wound DC motor — it belongs to the brushed DC motor family. Current reaches the rotor through carbon brushes and a commutator, the same as series and shunt DC motors. What makes compound different: it carries both a series field winding (strong starting torque) and a shunt field winding (steady speed). The result is a motor that still pulls hard from standstill but does not run away in speed the way a pure series motor does under light load. Plan on inspecting the brushes every 1,500-2,000 hours in intermittent duty.

Compound Wound — Why Steady Speed Suits Hydraulic Pumps

A hydraulic pump wants predictable flow: the same speed should give the same flow whether the oil is cold and stiff or warm and thin. A pure series motor does not do that — its speed swings widely with load, so flow drifts. The shunt winding in a compound motor flattens that speed curve, while the series winding still supplies the torque to break the pump free from rest. At 2800 rpm this model matches the direct-drive speed of common gear pumps, so it can couple straight to the pump without a step-up ratio. Two limits to respect: it is rated S2-60min (3 kW for 60 minutes, then cool), and it is an auxiliary motor — it drives pumps and compressors, not vehicle wheels.

How to Choose the Right Auxiliary Motor

  • By voltage: 80V DC — match your battery pack. 48V / 72V rewound versions available on request.
  • By load: 3 kW at 47 A suits a medium forklift steering or lift pump, a hydraulic power unit, or agricultural and construction hydraulics. For a single light steering pump the 1.5 kW XQD-1.5-3 may be enough.
  • By excitation: compound (this motor) for steady flow and predictable pump speed; series wound for maximum starting torque when speed control matters less.
  • By duty: S2-60min — one hour at full load from cold, then cool down. Built for intermittent auxiliary work, not continuous running; for near-continuous pump duty, size up.
  • By controller: a 47 A rated draw needs an 80V chopper in the 60-75 A class to absorb start-up inrush.
  • By rotation & mount: factory setting is clockwise viewed from the shaft end, B35 foot-and-flange. Send your pump's drawing and required rotation and we confirm before production.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this a traction motor or an auxiliary motor?

A: Auxiliary. The XQD-3-14 drives hydraulic pumps, power units and compressors — not vehicle wheels. Its 2800 rpm rated speed is a pump speed, not a road speed. For wheel drive, see our series wound DC traction motor range.

Q: Do I need a controller, and what rating?

A: Yes. Connected straight to the battery the motor runs to no-load speed with no control over pump pressure. Use an 80V DC chopper in the 60-75 A class so it covers the 47 A rated draw plus start-up inrush. Send us your pump and battery and we will confirm the rating.

Q: The nameplate says clockwise — can the rotation be reversed?

A: On a DC motor the direction follows the lead connection, so the factory setting is clockwise viewed from the shaft end and swapping the armature leads reverses it. Tell us which way your pump must turn before production — on a gear pump the wrong direction means no flow at all.
