How to Choose the Right Traction Motor
- By voltage: 96V DC to match heavy-vehicle battery packs (8 × 12V traction batteries in series). Use the 48V or 72V XQ range if your vehicle runs on those platforms; 96V is the right call when the cabling run is long or the load is heavy enough that 72V would push too much current.
- By power and torque: 15 kW / 95.5 N.m at 1500 rpm is heavy-traction class — loaded 2–3 ton forklifts, multi-ton transfer carts, tow tractors, mine locomotives. Smaller kW for lighter loads; larger for heavier.
- By speed range: 1500 rpm rated with 3200 rpm max gives a 2.1:1 range — useful for low-speed high-torque launch plus higher-speed cruise on light loads.
- By environment: IP21 fits indoor cabs, enclosed transfer carts, sheltered factory floors and dry mine tunnels — NOT for outdoor rain, washdown or immersion. Request IP44+ at inquiry for wet/outdoor use.
- By controller and cabling: 190A continuous and 250A+ stall current means the controller, main contactor and battery cables must all be rated accordingly. A: 190A is the normal running current at 96V and 15kW output — 96V × 190A = 18.24 kW of electrical input, of which about 15 kW reaches the shaft and the rest leaves as heat. Roughly 82% efficiency, which is normal for a self-excited DC traction motor of this size. The brushes and commutator are sized for this current; the controller, contactor and battery cabling must all be rated for 190A continuous with 250A+ surge headroom for stall and start-up transients. Mechanical sanity check: T = 9550 × P/n = 9550 × 15 / 1500 = 95.5 N.m, which matches the nameplate torque exactly.
Q: What does IP21 mean for outdoor or wet-environment use?
